Friedson Earns Laborers’ Union Endorsement in District 1

Announcement Represents Race’s First Major Organizational Endorsement to Date

Bethesda, Md. – With the first major union endorsement in Montgomery County’s highly competitive District One County Council race, the Baltimore-Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC) announced their endorsement of Andrew Friedson today. The BWLDC is an affiliate of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) and one of the largest unions in the Baltimore-Washington region, representing more than 7,000 members in building construction, environmental remediation, heavy and highway construction, industrial manufacturing, and county sanitation.

“I’m deeply honored and humbled to receive this early endorsement on behalf of the 7,000 hardworking LiUNA Members who work hard in the trenches each day in our communities,” Friedson said. “I’m committed to building a stronger and more inclusive economy that supports workers and small businesses and lifts wages for every Montgomery County family.”

The news of Friedson securing the District One Council race’s first major organizational endorsement comes on the heels of the campaign’s first fundraising report where Friedson reported a massive fundraising advantage. With $219,000 raised from 673 contributions, the first-time candidate reported over $200,000 cash on hand last month, representing more than double any of his competitors, including significantly more low-dollar, local, and total contributions than any rival campaign.

The Laborers’ announcement is the latest in a series of high-profile endorsements that the Friedson campaign has received in less than four months since filing for the District One County Council seat, including Comptroller Peter Franchot, Senators Brian Feldman and Craig Zucker, former three-term County Executive Doug Duncan and former Congressman C. Thomas McMillen, among others.

A lifelong Montgomery County resident and University of Maryland graduate, Friedson attended Wayside, Hoover and Churchill public schools. He spent the past several years as Senior Policy Advisor, Deputy Chief of Staff and Division Director for the Comptroller of Maryland where he focused on making government more effective, efficient, and responsive, previously oversaw a complete restructuring of Maryland’s $6 billion 529 college savings program, recently served on Maryland’s Small Business Development Financing Authority, and was a driving force behind launching, MD ABLE, which launched this fall to provide financial security and independence for Marylanders with disabilities. Friedson currently serves as Chair of the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families.
